How Does the Skin Work?

By: Amir Karam

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It is a reflection of our health. If you’re healthy, your skin reflects that health with a bright, youthful glow. When you think about the skin being a physical part of your anatomy, it makes sense that everything that goes into your body is going to affect your skin.

If you want to have beautiful, youthful skin, you’ve got to be careful about what goes into your body. That means plenty of water, a healthy diet, vitamins and nutrients, and plenty of good sleep. These are all foundational parts of good skin health.

Hear more about this in-depth in my video about skin care and aging.

What does healthy skin look like?

Healthy skin reflects a healthy body. Healthy skin has a glow; it’s bright, the skin tone and color are even, and the texture of the skin is smooth. Pores are generally smaller, and the skin is supple and youthful-looking.

If your skin is already healthy, keep it that way. It’s not difficult, but it requires consistency and some discipline in terms of your lifestyle. Keep your body healthy with a proper diet, plenty of water and electrolytes, and a consistent skincare routine that keeps your skin nourished and radiant. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, never, ever smoke, and protect your skin from the sun with a proper sunscreen that protects from both UVA (the rays that age your skin) and UVB rays (the rays that burn your skin).

All of these factors keep your body healthy, and your skin reflects that with beautiful luminosity, bright radiance, and a youthful glow.

What are the signs of skin aging?

As the skin ages, it gets dehydrated. How does that translate when it comes to the changes in the skin? We begin to see the following unwanted effects:

  • A change in oil production
  • A decrease in collagen production
  • Pores get larger
  • Skin texture is less balanced
  • Pigmentation increases (sun spots, red spots, broken capillaries)
  • The skin gets thinner and more fragile

How do we make our skin healthy again?

If your skin has changed due to age or changes in lifestyle, you can actually reverse these effects. Surgery is the only thing that will correct significant sagging tissues and volume loss, but the skin is separate from that. Even with a facelift, if the skin is not addressed individually, it will still look older, dull, and uneven.

So how do we change our aging skin back into the bright, youthful, glowing look? Follow these simple steps:

Man cutting fruits and vegetables

Eat a healthy diet

Clean eating means healthy proteins like fish, lots of leafy greens and berries that act as antioxidants, and a generally colorful, balanced diet. The skin looks brighter and fresher, reflecting the foods you’re eating.

Take vitamins and minerals to boost your nutrition

Find high-quality vitamins and minerals that help achieve bright, clear, beautiful skin. ‎Vitamin D, C, E, and K are all excellent for skin health.

Drink plenty of water

To keep your skin hydrated, supple, and youthful-looking, you should drink two liters of water a day. You can do this with eight glasses of water, a few in the morning and a few in the afternoon. Add electrolytes in as well, which will help your skin absorb the hydration better for a more youthful, plumper look.

Protect your skin from the sun

Sun exposure is the top accelerator of the skin aging process. Too much sun exposure will age and damage your skin faster than anything else besides smoking. While you should feel free to be out in the sun for the beneficial effects it can have on your body, don’t overdo it. Always wear a good sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB rays.

Don’t expose your skin to toxins

Toxins aren’t just alcohol, drugs, or smoking. Processed or junk foods are also toxins. An unhealthy diet, too much alcohol, and smoking will quickly age your skin. Smoking is the top skin aging agent besides sun exposure.

Follow a proper skincare routine

Stick with a proper skincare routine that you can do consistently, every day. Find products with the right ingredients that reverse the signs of skin aging and addresses it at the cellular level. Look for products that include the following vital ingredients for skin health, youthfulness, and glow:

  • Vitamin C
  • Peptides
  • Retinol
  • Niacinimide
  • Growth factors
  • Non-hydroquinone lighteners
  • Hyaluronic acid serum and lipids
