Keep Your Skin Bright This Autumn

Amir Karam MD Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Founder / Creator of KaramMD Skin

Changing seasons can be tough on your skin, especially as summer gives way to the colder temperatures of fall. As autumn comes, your skin may become dry and dull, resulting in an older, tired appearance.

As the outdoor temperatures cool down, the humidity levels drop, which can cause dry air. Heating indoors also takes moisture from the air. These factors combine to cause dry skin. Dead, dry skin tends to build up and results in an older or tired appearance and can contribute to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other skin problems.

How can I keep my skin looking beautiful as fall comes? It’s all about skincare choices

Dull, dry skin can be concerning, but you can achieve healthy, hydrated, glowing skin again with these fall tips to reverse dull, aging skin. I get into these in detail in this video, but here’s a simple summary to keep in mind as the weather cools down and your skin starts changing.

KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED

Drink at least eight glasses of water and include electrolytes to ensure your body can absorb the water properly.

USE A HUMIDIFIER

Using a humidifier helps combat and prevent dry skin by increasing the humidity level in the air, which keeps your skin hydrated and stops it from drying out in dry air.

EXFOLIATE

Exfoliate your skin 1-3 times a week to remove the dry, dead cells and allow the new, healthy skin cells to come through.

USE A CLEANSER IN THE MORNING AND AT NIGHT

Remove dirt and toxins with a proper cleanser in the morning and at night to moisturize and refresh your skin.

USE LIP BALM

Keep a gentle lip balm on your lips to seal in moisture. If your skin is particularly dry, you can also use lip balm on your cheeks, which helps soothe the skin and provides a dewy effect.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN

Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects your skin from both UV A and UV B rays.

EAT A HEALTHY DIET

Dry, dull skin is caused by a diet high in sugars and processed fatty foods. Eat a diet of healthy proteins, fruits and vegetables to keep your skin radiant and youthful.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Stop your skin from appearing dull and flat but getting plenty of sleep. With 7-9 hours of sleep, your circulation is strong and the blood supply to your skin is adequate, keeping it bright and youthful.

BOOK A FACIAL!

Nothing helps the skin during the fall seasonal change and the following drier months like a nourishing, indulgent facial. The HydraFacial is particularly effective, but any good facial treatment helps return moisture to the skin and balances the skin texture beautifully.

USE THE RIGHT SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Choose skincare products with the right ingredients to keep the skin plump, hydrated and fresh. With the right ingredients, your skincare products achieve radiant, beautiful skin. These are the ingredient to look for when it comes to a glowing, youthful, perfectly fresh face as the seasons change:

  • Niacinimide
  • Retinol
  • Hyaluronic acid serum
  • Growth factors
  • Vitamin C
  • Lipids
  • Peptides
  • Non-hydroquinone lighteners
USE VITAMIN C TO REPAIR ANY SUMMER SUN DAMAGE

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps repair and protect damaged skin. Vitamin C brightens the skin and evens out discoloration and uneven skin texture. A Vitamin C serum will neutralize the skin and  effectively reduce oil while achieving a moisturizing effect to balance the skin tone, lighten dark spots and decrease pigmentation concerns.

ADD A HYDRATING NIGHTTIME FACE CREAM

A proper nighttime face cream locks moisture into the skin. When we sleep at night, the body loses moisture and causes the skin to dry out. Combat these effects with a non-greasy, hydrating face cream to keep your skin properly hydrated.

LAYER SKINCARE PRODUCTS CORRECTLY

This tip is simple and easy with the Trifecta three-step skincare collection: Rinse, Quench, and Illuminate. With the Trifecta, skin concerns are resolved as quickly as 1,2,3.
