In the beauty industry, a central marketing message is to constantly change skin care products so that your skin does not grow "resistant" to your regimen. As a plastic surgeon dedicated to helping you look as great as you feel, I want to increase awareness of how this is false and purely a marketing method to entice customers to try new products. This is one of those skincare tips you should never follow.
No, you don’t need to change your skin product every few months.
The myth is that you must frequently change your skincare routine to avoid your skin “getting used to” the products. Generally, if a skincare product or ingredient is good for your skin now, it will always be good for your skin, no matter how long you use it. Your favorite skincare products won’t stop working if you don’t change your routine. If your skin hasn’t changed, there’s no need to change your products.
When you apply a product, your skin’s receptors will take it in and go to work immediately to perform its function. Your skin doesn’t build up immunity to skincare products over time because there is no direct mechanism for your skin to become immune to the effects of products.
Your skincare products don’t simply stop working; they quit because your skin has changed.
Skin is a living organ; living things change and evolve constantly. Young, fresh, healthy skin is hydrated, balanced, and supple. It has strong elasticity and tiny pores and is free from lines and wrinkles.
With time, our skin starts to change at the cellular level. These changes are triggered by hormonal effects and other factors that slow collagen production. If your favorite skincare products no longer produce the results you’re used to, your skin has likely changed. Each aspect of skin aging: loss of collagen, pigmentation, dilated pores, and improper water and oil balance, can be addressed simultaneously with the right treatments and skincare products.
A committed, consistent application of sun protection, proper, active ingredients on your skin, and the occasional use of treatments such as microneedling or lasers is what it takes to achieve supple, beautiful skin. When you find an effective anti-aging skincare routine that works for you, stick with it.
The KaramMD Trifecta
I created the Trifecta to provide my patients with a simple skincare line they could trust. The Trifecta includes all the vital ingredients for beautiful skin, but it doesn’t require a complicated routine that you can’t maintain with consistency. While there are some great products out there, I couldn’t find them in a simple, sustainable routine you can keep consistently, without fail.
I wanted to find a solution to this, so I spent five years formulating the KaramMD Trifecta. The Trifecta is a simple, three-product skincare routine packed with vital ingredients to reverse the aging process. The Trifecta is clinically proven to achieve supple, radiant, youthful skin. It includes the following products:
RINSE
A hydrating, refreshing cleanser that softens the skin as it removes toxins and triggers cell regeneration. Rinse is also designed to help prevent UVA damage and prepare your skin to absorb the active ingredients in the other products of the Trifecta line.
QUENCH
Quench skin-brightening vitamin C serum helps prevent collagen breakdown and renews the skin, reducing fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of age.
ILLUMINATE
An anti-aging cream that can be used as an all-in-one product or with Rinse and Quench to achieve a range of positive effects. Illuminate improves skin elasticity, deeply hydrates and moisturizes, and boosts collagen production and cell turnover to achieve more vibrant, luminous skin.
POLISH
In addition to the Trifecta, I created an exfoliator to remove dead skin and buildup on the skin’s surface: Polish. Polish gently evens the skin texture and smooths the skin by removing dead cells and toxins at a deeper level. Polish also regulates oil production and improves skin hydration.
