As a facial plastic surgeon, I see patients all the time who are thrilled with their weight loss but deeply concerned about the toll it has taken on their face.
They feel healthier than ever but look older and more tired. The good news? There are highly effective solutions to restore your youthful contours. But let’s first understand what’s happening.
GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic, and competitors Wegovy and Mounjaro, have revolutionized weight loss, helping millions shed unwanted pounds. These medications work by mimicking glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite. Originally developed for diabetes management, they have since transformed the weight loss landscape by significantly reducing hunger and helping individuals sustain long-term weight loss.
However, with this rapid weight loss comes an unintended side effect: facial aging—often called ‘Ozempic Face.’ Many patients are caught off guard when they see their reflection and notice hollowed cheeks, sagging skin, and an overall gaunt appearance.
This happens because Ozempic not only reduces overall body fat but also eliminates facial fat, which is essential for a supple, youthful appearance. Without sufficient facial fat, cheeks lose volume, skin begins to sag, and wrinkles become more pronounced.
These changes occur due to a combination of biological factors, including the loss of fat, muscle, and even some bone mass—all of which play a crucial role in maintaining facial structure and a youthful look.
