There are certain signs of aging people tolerate fairly well. Upper lip lines usually aren’t one of them.
In fact, I’ve found these vertical lines — often called “smoker’s lines” — can bother patients more than much larger aging changes elsewhere on the face. Even after a beautiful facelift or skin rejuvenation procedure, persistent upper lip lines can leave someone feeling like the outcome is incomplete.
I’ve had many patients tell me these lines bother them more than their neck or jawline because they’re impossible to hide in motion, conversation, and expression.
And despite the nickname, these lines absolutely do not only happen to smokers.
They happen because of aging skin, repetitive muscle movement, collagen loss, thinning tissue, and time.
After treating this area for more than 20 years, I’ve also learned something else: Some of the most commonly performed treatments can actually make this problem harder to fix later.
So let’s walk through how these lines form, what actually works, and where I think people often go wrong.

I found it interesting that a lip lift could be helpful. I don’t think I’m the only one who would like to know more about this, and not even necessarily for lip lines. Could you please do a video or an email, or even better both, about that lip procedure? Especially the downsides. Thank you so very much.

Hi Sydney—Thank you so much for the thoughtful suggestion and, you’re right, a lip lift is definitely a topic a lot of people are curious about, not just for lip lines. We really appreciate you taking the time to share this idea, including the request to cover the downsides as well. We’ll pass this along to Dr. Karam so he can consider putting together content on this, whether that’s a video, an email, or both.

Thank you Dr. Amir for your learning curve. It was very helpful. I also have noticed that women who use a straw to drink with seem to have more “smoker lip lines” as well even if they have never smoked. I do not at all use a straw at all. I also when I am taking a traditional sauna bring my beauty iron in and work on that area above the upper lip. Too stimulate the area for growth and repair . Then after I ice the area down . Too make those lines disappear. Yeah I know you will say it will do nothing .

Thank you so much for this straight forward information on upper lip lines…I concur that is one of the most obvious and frustrating issues I look at every day….i have focused on the very best skincare I could afford, my entire life….and I’ve had many procedures over the years…I appreciate all of your postings and information …and, oh, there is this…I am approaching 80 very soon, and am energetic and vital in every way…my face just hasn’t kept up with that energy….and I am experiencing what many women have , invisibility….
Thank you

I hate the lines on my upper lip. Does Dr Karam do the laser procedure he mentioned above and how do I get a consult?
Thanks,
Lara
