What Is Environmental Damage and Why Does It Matter?
Environmental damage refers to the cumulative harm inflicted on your skin by external factors like ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, air pollution, smoke, extreme temperatures, infrared radiation, and even high-energy visible light (HEV), also known as blue light.
These exposures lead to the overproduction of free radicals, unstable molecules that steal electrons from healthy cells. This process, called oxidative stress, initiates a destructive chain reaction in the skin:
- Collagen and elastin fibers break down prematurely
- Melanin production becomes irregular, causing hyperpigmentation
- The skin barrier weakens, leading to dryness, inflammation, and sensitivity
- DNA is damaged, increasing long-term risk of skin cancer
The visible result? Fine lines, uneven tone, dull texture, loss of firmness, and accelerated aging, often referred to as photoaging when caused by sun exposure.

Hi,
I am 62 years old and just started using Trifecta. The very first application made an immediate improvement (a nice clear glow)👍. I am hopeful for long term improvements.
I live mainly in the South of Spain. I am Scottish and love (feel better) having a golden tan. Is it silly to use oral tanning products (tablets, powders/drinks) instead of sitting in the sun? Will the increased melanin cause dark patches or give an even
Tan?
I always use high factor sun protection on my face and body, wear a hat and sunglasses and avoid the sun on my face. I’ve had BBL laser contour which made fabulous improvements.
Also would regular micro needling help the crepe skin on my upper arms and above my knees? I lost about a stone in weight (a lot as only 5ft tall) when my husband was seriously ill and the crepe skin appeared then. I think because I’m older the skin can’t cope with the weight loss and spring back. I workout regularly but that isn’t improving the crepe skin.
Your advice is very much appreciated. I love your videos and articles. I wish had discovered them sooner.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Pauline—Thank you for your comment! You’re absolutely right to be mindful of sun protection, especially in the south of Spain. Oral tanning supplements don’t work like UV exposure and can sometimes cause uneven pigmentation, so continuing your great SPF habits is the best long-term approach. For crepey skin on the upper arms and knees, microneedling can help improve texture and firmness over time when paired with hydration and collagen-supporting skincare. Thank you for sharing your story. Your dedication to caring for your skin is truly inspiring. 💞

I have been using the trifecta for about 2 years now. It has not done anything for my hyperpigmentation but has improved my overall facial skin. What more can I do for hyperpigmentation which I have had for over 40+ years?

Hi Gurvrinder—Thanks for your comment! While the ingredients in Trifecta are clinically backed to support a more even skin tone, dark spots can be especially stubborn. Even with consistent use, discoloration may take time to fade, particularly if it’s been present for a long while. Daily sun protection plays a crucial role in preventing new spots from forming and supporting the fading of existing ones. To learn more, I’ve linked a helpful article from our KaramMD Journal below that dives deeper into dark spots, melasma, and the best ingredients to target them: 👉 Hyperpigmentation vs. Melasma: Best Ingredients for Dark Spots <https://karammdskin.com/blogs/expert-advice/hyperpigmentation-vs-melasma-best-ingredients-for-dark-spots?pos=1&psq=dark&ss=e&v=1.0>
