The skincare industry thrives on novelty, but skin responds to biology, not trends. What truly matters is formulation, concentration, and consistency.

The skincare industry is huge and driven by momentum; there's always a “next” product, a new launch, a hero ingredient, a promise that this is the one that will work some magic. And to be fair, innovation matters. But a lot of what’s marketed as innovation is really just repackaged novelty, dressed up in premium packaging and priced to signal results before it's earned them.

Your skin doesn’t respond to buzz. It responds to biology.

What moves the needle isn't the gold-encrusted jar, the branding, or the in-depth story. It’s the formula, the concentration, and whether you can stay consistent long enough for the skin to actually change. In this piece, I want to peel back the marketing layers of skincare and make it simpler to evaluate what’s worth your time – not just for your skin, but for your wallet, too.

Unraveling the Intricacies of the Skincare Market

You've probably seen it: Skincare brands often deploy sophisticated marketing strategies to justify the hefty price tags attached to their products. A combination of persuasive advertising, the use of complex skincare jargon, and even the implication of scarcity or exclusivity serves to create an aura of superior effectiveness around these products. In many cases, these marketing techniques don't accurately reflect the actual potency or efficacy of the formulation.

One of the biggest dangers of unsubstantiated marketing claims is the risk that consumers may use products that not only fail to deliver the promised benefits but also harm their skin. Without rigorous scientific testing and clinical trials, there's no assurance that these products are safe or effective. Some companies exploit consumer vulnerability by making exaggerated claims just to boost sales, without considering the potential consequences of their products.

This exact scenario illustrates that higher prices do not always equate to better product quality or effectiveness, making it crucial to look beyond marketing tactics and price tags.

Trifecta was built around ingredients backed by years of real research, not trends.

I spent 5 years studying what consistently improves skin, then built a routine that stays simple enough to repeat, even though simplicity is not what sells in skincare. My first instinct was to consolidate everything into one product, which became Illuminate. But long-term results come from a complete, streamlined system, built on actives that are proven, well-formulated, and used consistently. That starts with understanding the ingredients that actually do the work.

The True Champions: Active Ingredients

Amid the dense fog of fleetingly persuasive marketing tactics and impressive packaging, it's essential to stay focused on the fundamental aspect of quality skincare: the active ingredients. Active ingredients are compounds that have been scientifically proven to directly contribute to skin health and appearance. Here are some skincare actives that are very well-researched:

However, it's not enough for a fad product to simply contain these active ingredients. The formulation's effectiveness also depends on factors such as ingredient concentration, pH balance, and packaging, which can affect the stability of certain skincare ingredients.

You can see this principle in how I built Trifecta. Once I understood how essential vitamin C is, I didn’t add a single form and call it done; I created an award-winning vitamin C serum, AKA Quench, with three forms of vitamin C, plus aloe and sodium hyaluronate, so the ingredients work in synergy. I started the system with Rinse, a cleanser designed to support pH harmony and prep the skin without stripping, so your actives can work as soon as they're applied.

Labels and Ingredients Lists

Armed with an understanding of active ingredients and their functions, the next step is to learn to read skincare labels and ingredient lists with a trained eye. At first glance, they can feel overwhelming. But once you know what you’re looking for, a label becomes less like a wall of jargon and more like a simple map of what a product is actually designed to do for your skin.

As you move through your skincare journey, paying attention to which ingredients are included and how they’re used matters just as much as recognizing the names themselves.

Every intricate ingredient has a job – like hydrating, exfoliating, supporting the barrier, or helping protect against environmental stress. When the proportions and formulation are right, the product can target your concerns, whether that’s breakouts, tone, fine lines, or sensitivity.

It’s also important to remember that “stronger” isn’t always better. Excessive concentrations or stacking too many aggressive products can lead to irritation, redness, and a disrupted barrier. Overusing potent actives like retinol or glycolic acid, for example, can leave skin dry, reactive, and more sensitive over time, which often looks like the very problems you were trying to fix.

In my practice, one of the most common issues I see isn’t under-treatment; it’s skin that’s been overworked by well-intentioned routines. Patients come in with the “right” ingredients, but at the wrong strength or layered way too aggressively, and their skin barrier indeed suffers.

When we simplify and rebalance, the skin almost always recovers.

The goal here is informed, steady care. When you understand ingredients and appropriate levels, you can choose products that are both effective + safe, and tailor your routine to what your skin can realistically tolerate. It also helps to keep a list of common irritants in mind:

Price Tag and Packaging

Many fad skincare products on the market today rely heavily on their aesthetics to attract customers. Sleek, luxurious packaging, coupled with a hefty price tag, can create an illusion of superiority and effectiveness. However, the truth is that neither the price tag nor the packaging have any bearing on the actual performance of the product on your skin.

Take, for example, two creams: one comes in a delicate, frosted glass jar with gold accents, costs $300, and claims to contain a proprietary blend of exotic botanicals. The other is a simple tube that costs $100 and contains proven ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C.

Despite the vast difference in presentation, the $100 cream is more likely to deliver better results because the formula and concentrations matter more than the packaging.

That’s also the philosophy behind how I built Trifecta. At first, I wanted to put everything into a single product, as noted above, because that’s the easiest approach. But real skin results require a beginning-to-end approach, not a single bottle trying to do everything. Instead of building one “hero” product, I built a complete, streamlined system from start to finish. The goal was always the same: make this as easy as possible for people to stay consistent.

The Driving Force Behind Trifecta

In a world where the skincare industry seems to pivot with every fad and buzzy trend, my frustration grew as I witnessed countless people (and patients) chasing quick fixes and flashy promises, only to fall prey to products that left their hopes unfulfilled and wallets emptier. This concern was the driving force behind the creation of Trifecta. In fact, if you were to break down all of the components in Trifecta individually, our products are actually two to three times less expensive than if you were to get all of these ingredients separately in different products.

I understand the desire to combat aging and feel as vibrant on the outside as you do on the inside. When I founded KaramMD Skin, I aimed to revolutionize skincare by offering effective, clinically tested products that cut through the noise and deliver results, without the glitz and exorbitant costs that have become too common. Our approach is simple but vital: we do the research for you, earning your trust through transparency and efficacy. Your skincare routine should be about genuine improvement, and that's what Trifecta is all about.

The Reality Beyond the Hype

Understanding the science behind products is essential to avoid being swayed by marketing hype and to make informed choices. A skincare routine's efficacy doesn't depend on how expensive the products are or how appealing their packaging is. Instead, it's about focusing on active ingredients and concentrations, and how they align with your skin's needs.

By learning how to discern effective skincare products from overpriced, ineffective ones, we not only save money but also invest wisely in our skin's overall health. Remember, the true secret to radiant, glowing skin lies not in extravagant prices or fancy packaging, but in high-quality, scientifically proven ingredients, and using those products consistently over time.

With this in mind, you're now equipped to make smarter, more informed decisions when you find yourself browsing the skincare aisle. After all, skincare is not just about indulging in a routine; it's about nourishing your skin with what it needs to stay healthy and radiant.

Happy skincare shopping!

Hi Terri,

Dr.Karam does not recommend using an eye cream and you can read more about his thoughts on that topic here (https://karammdskin.com/blogs/expert-advice/the-truth-about-eye-creams-do-you-really-need-them?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=campaign&utm_campaign=Journal%3A%20Demystifying%20Eye%20Creams&_kx=rMYmJB5QZ-Brq2kXWElRFHraWpoVmnqejBrAINhNV3I%3D.QV6RRx).

As far as the neck goes, we recommend you use the Trifecta on your neck as well as your face!

Do you ever offer a sample size or travel size at a lower price for people to see if the products will work for them before purchasing the full size set?

Terri Schumann

I watched a video you did about skin care products Martha Stewart and your wife. I’m using Trifecta and I love it, but would you please send me other products you recommend like eye cream, and neck products? Thank you!
