What Are Botanical Lighteners and Brighteners?
Botanical lighteners and brighteners are powerful, plant-derived ingredients known for their ability to gently lighten dark spots, balance uneven skin tone, and enhance radiance.
These naturally sourced compounds work with your skin, not against it, offering antioxidant support, anti-inflammatory benefits, and pigment-regulating activity, without the harsh side effects of chemical lightening agents.
But brighteners and lighteners work on the skin in different ways, so let’s first look at the distinct difference between them:
- Botanical lighteners work at the cellular level to inhibit melanin production, targeting dark spots, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and post-inflammatory discoloration. They focus on correcting pigment irregularities for a more even complexion.
- Botanical brighteners, on the other hand, focus on boosting skin’s overall vibrancy. They enhance luminosity by reducing dullness, calming irritation, and protecting against environmental stress that can lead to skin damage. While they don’t directly suppress pigment, they improve skin clarity, making your skin look fresher and more youthful.

Dear Dr. Karam,
I am so looking forward to start my product. I have one question. I have started Diamonds Glow right before I placed the order for Trifecta. My aesthetician advised that I do this once a month.
Please advise if I should continue Diamond Glow while Trifecta.
I attached the note below.
Thank you for all you do,
I truly appreciate you.
Maureen
Diamond Glow can definitely help with melasma, especially as a maintenance treatment after Aerolase. Let me explain how it works:
✨ It uses a diamond-tip exfoliation that gently removes dead skin cells and improves texture without irritating your skin — which is very important for melasma-prone skin.
✨ It also infuses medical-grade serums into the skin, and we can select brightening ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, or tranexamic acid, which help reduce pigmentation and promote an even tone.
✨ It enhances circulation and stimulates cell renewal, giving your skin a healthier, more radiant appearance.
Also, it’s completely normal that your skin feels more sensitive during this time — melasma tends to get triggered by heat and summer temperatures, not just direct sun. So it’s really important to protect your skin daily with SPF and avoid too much heat exposure.

Hi Maureen—Thanks for your comment! Yes, you can absolutely use the Trifecta alongside DiamondGlow treatments. In fact, it’s a fantastic pairing! DiamondGlow helps to exfoliate and deeply infuse the skin, while the Trifecta supports long-term skin health by hydrating, brightening, and stimulating collagen between treatments. We recommend pausing Trifecta products for 24 hours post-treatment to give your skin a chance to settle, especially the Retinol-based Illuminate. After that, you can resume your routine as usual for best results! ✨

Dear Dr. Karam,
Thank you for explaining everything on Melasma. I have been on the journey for over 15 years and I tried everything and thousands of dollars. At this time I am using Zo products and my face is very sensitive and nothing improved. I am about to try your product. Your video give me confidence and the assurance that I need to try your product.
Thank you,
Maureen

I have discoloration from the use of hydrochloriaquinne. It is a med I take for Lupus. The back of my legs and front of them are covered with dark spots. Would your brighteners help that?

KaramMD Skin replied:
Hi Jody—Thanks for your comment! Medication-related pigmentation, especially from hydroxychloroquine, can be a challenging and frustrating side effect. While every skin type and situation is unique, the Trifecta uses ingredients like Triple Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and Retinol, which are clinically proven to help improve the appearance of discoloration and support healthy skin renewal over time. Many of our customers with stubborn pigmentation have seen encouraging results with consistent use. That said, since your discoloration is medication-related, we always recommend checking in with your dermatologist first to make sure any topical treatment is safe and appropriate alongside your current regimen.

Will trifecta usage treat grey blue pigmentation on face? If not what will rid that discoloration

KaramMD Skin replied:
Hi Chrisi—Thanks for your comment! Dr. Karam’s Trifecta system is designed to improve skin tone, texture, and radiance—and it can help with certain types of discoloration, especially those related to sun damage or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. However, if the blue-grey discoloration is due to internal causes (like medication side effects, circulation issues, or low oxygen levels), Trifecta won’t be effective, and we recommend consulting with a medical professional to explore the root cause.
