What Retinol Actually Does For Your Skin
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. Once it’s absorbed by the skin, it converts into retinoic acid—the usable form your skin cells recognize and respond to, triggering them to behave in a healthier, more youthful way.
That means it:
- Stimulates collagen to reduce fine lines and improve firmness
- Accelerates cell turnover to smooth texture and prevent clogged pores
- Reduces pigmentation to even out tone and fade sun damage
All of this happens at the cellular level, deep in the dermis—where true skin aging begins. That’s what makes retinol so powerful. It doesn’t just treat the surface—it remodels the skin from the inside out.

Hi Eve—Thanks for your comment! You generally don’t need to use retinol and tretinoin together, and layering them can increase irritation. Tretinoin is stronger and should be used at night only. If someone were to use both (which should only be done under medical supervision), they might be alternated on different nights.

Great information.
I’ve been using tretinoin for years with no issues. Now I’ve been using Trifecta . Should I use the tretinoin 2 or 3 times a week? What is the advantage of using both? Thanks

Hi Nancy—Thanks for your comment! Trifecta is meant to be used as a complete skincare system, but after you finish all three steps, you could apply your additional Retinol or Tretinoin afterwards as a supplement to the Retinol we already have in Illuminate. If you have any moisturizing products, those would be applied as the final step.

Hi Emilie — Thanks for your comment! Yes, we do ship all KaramMD products internationally! However, please note that we can not ship EltaMD sunscreens, which we cannot ship outside the U.S. per their company policy. Retinal is generally considered more potent and faster-acting than retinol, as it requires only one step to convert into retinoic acid, the active form of Vitamin A. While it can be effective, due to its higher potency, retinal may be more likely to cause irritation, redness, or peeling, especially when first introduced to the skin. Retinol, with its slower conversion, is often better tolerated. This is why Dr.Karam chose to use an encapsulated, slow-release Retinol in Illuminate which allows for more consistent use while still delivering results.

Thank you for the insightful comparison.
So once we are used to retinol we can switch to tretinoin like you mentioned, and no need to use retinol anymore as long as the skin tolerates tretinoin.

Hi Ola —Thanks for your comment! Retinol is essential in any serious anti-aging routine. To answer your question—yes, once your skin has built up tolerance, you can switch to tretinoin. While prescription-strength tretinoin can deliver faster results, it’s only effective if your skin can tolerate it. That’s why many people actually see better long-term results with a daily, well-formulated retinol they can stick with consistently.
