What Causes Dull Skin?
Dull skin is a common issue which can stem from a variety of factors that impact your skin’s health and vibrancy. Understanding these causes is the first step to reversing them and regaining a radiant complexion.
- Dehydration: Dehydration impacts everyone, regardless of skin type or age, and is the leading cause of dull, uneven, and flaky skin. Without adequate hydration, skin loses its plumpness, suppleness, and glow.
- Winter Weather: Cold, dry air and indoor heating are significant contributors to dull skin during colder months. These conditions strip the skin of moisture and disrupt its barrier function.
- Build-Up of Dead Skin Cells: Slower cell turnover, especially with age, leads to a noticeable build-up of dead cells, creating a rough texture and blocking the skin’s natural luminosity.
- Poor Circulation: Reduced activity and slower blood flow deprive the skin of oxygen and nutrients, which are vital for a radiant complexion.
- Sun Damage: Sun exposure causes oxidative stress and uneven pigmentation, diminishing skin brightness over time.
- Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep exacerbate dullness and their effects may build up gradually over time.

I appreciate your Journal postings and overall approach to skin care and would be signed up for your vertical life in a heartbeat if possible! I was very blessed with good genes and never had problems with my skin until recently, in my late 60s. And that is with being in the sun most of my life, at at time when we did not know about sunscreen. Unfortunately, when I did learn and know of the damage sun can cause, my skin was not happy with any products. It would cause breakouts and redness and that remains true. I used one moisturizer with a low SPF from a well known skin care line, for over 20 years. Twice a day every day. and my skin was happy. I have olive skin and rarely wore make up; my skin did not like that either and I never really needed a cover up for blemishes. Again, I was very lucky. Then the product was discontinued and in my search for a replacement, my skin rebelled. Sunspots started appearing and I am constantly fighting blotchy red skin and diagnosed with rosacea this past year at 67. I was finally prescribed an antibacterial gel that did help for awhile. Then a second which again helped but never really resolved the redness. I started doxycyline recently and that has given great relief but I am still trying to find a product that I can use daily that will not result in exacerbation of the rosacea. I would say I have a very mild case and no acne, so it is truly just the redness with small ‘spots’ that flare. My fear is that the Trifecta products will result in the rosacea to flare. What is your experience of patients with rosacea using Trifecta? I have never tolerated vit c products or retinol. I live a healthy lifestyle; hot yoga for the past 18 years, cycling, strength training and hiking. My diet is overall healthy and I eat seasonally fresh foods. I have had a steady weight my entire adult life. Never smoked. Alcohol intake is very limited; less than 1-2 a week (probably 3 a month). I do live in a very dry climate (Bend, Oregon) which is also at a higher altitude. I appreciate your thoughts on the best approach to a good skin care routine for those of us who have sensitive skin. Thank you!

Hi Debra—Thank you for your comment! It sounds like you’ve been very lucky with your skin but now that you’re needing some help, it’s never too late to start an effective regime. The Trifecta was formulated to work on all skin types and many customers find they tolerate our products even when they’ve struggled with “similar” ones in the past. Dr. Karam created these products with everyone in mind so even the most sensitive skin types can enjoy the Trifecta! That being said, we always recommend that you consult with your physician or qualified healthcare provider before making any changes to your skincare routine, using new products, or addressing specific skin concerns like Rosacea. Your healthcare provider is best suited to evaluate your individual needs and provide personalized advice and recommendations. Dry skin/flakiness can occur when beginning a new skincare regimen (especially if using a retinol for the first time) and should start to subside up after regular use. Because you live in Bend which can be on the drier side, you might add the Enrich Breathable Barrier Balm <https://karammdskin.com/products/enrich-breathable-barrier-balm>as a perfect supplement to the Trifecta for additional moisture. It has been clinically tested with results that show improvement to skin barrier and moisture and has some bonus anti-aging properties. If you have additional questions please reach out to our customer care team at cusotmerservice@karammdskin.com.
