The amount of skincare products out there can be overwhelming: cleansers, serums, oils, moisturizers, creams, face masks, toners… if you have a bathroom full of these products, trust me, you’re not alone.
But, too many skincare products don’t just fill up your space; they can also make keeping up with a consistent routine far more difficult.
The truth is, you don’t actually need a lot of fancy skincare products to achieve beautiful, bright, glowing skin.
If you have the right products and use your skincare routine consistently, every single day, you can skip the expensive eye creams and fussy details.
In fact, it’s far more important to have skincare products that are simple and easy to use than it is to have a ton of products available, especially if you have so many you can’t keep up.
When it comes to choosing those products, if you don’t have the vital ingredients needed healthy skin, it doesn’t matter how many products you have in your skincare routine—you aren’t going to see the results you’re hoping for.
So, which skincare products do you really need, and which ones can you skip?
Here’s my opinion:
Skincare Products You Don’t Need
Simplify your skincare routine and focus on what truly matters. Not all skincare products are necessary for achieving healthy skin; in fact, some might be setting you back without you realizing.
Here’s a list of items you can skip without compromising your routine, and why you don’t need them.

I have been using your trifecta products for quite a while and am just beginning to see an improvement in the wrinkles around my eyes. I was so excited as these wrinkles came seemingly overnight following a very difficult and long term illness of my husband. Many sleepless nights, 911 calls and surgeries.
But now I’m facing the long term cost and am so depressed that I can’t find a way financially to continue, I’m 75, in good health and have always taken care of my body and skin. But now I am on Social Security and the product takes about 1/3 to 1/4 of my monthly income. I know you are not in the charity business but is there any way that I can get your products at a reduced rate? If you can work with me I would be ever grateful and would, by word of mouth, tell everyone I know how great your products are. Thank you so much for your kindness.

Hi Judy—Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt comment with us. We’re truly sorry to hear about the difficult season you’ve been through, but we’re so glad to hear that you’re beginning to see an improvement in the wrinkles around your eyes and that you’re otherwise in good health. We completely understand your concern about the cost, and we never want anyone to feel that they have to choose between caring for their skin and other important expenses. While we don’t have a special reduced-rate program, our Trifecta subscription does offer 20% off, and you can adjust the frequency of your shipments to better fit your needs. You can also skip or cancel at any time, so you’re never locked into receiving products on a schedule that doesn’t work for you.
We’re so grateful for your kind words about our products, and especially for the trust you’ve placed in Dr. Karam and our team. Thank you for being part of our KaramMD community!

I wish I could afford your skincare! Unfortunately it’s way out of my price range as someone with medical bills for multiple chronic illnesses to pay for. I really appreciate that you give us recommendations for ingredients to use and not use rather than just saying that if you’re not using your skincare, nothing else will work. I appreciate your advice and integrity, thankyou :-)

A week ago, our ex-daughter in law took me out for a belated birthday celebration. Out of the blue, she asked me what I was using on my skin, she said my cheeks were so smooth and she asked me if I was wearing makeup (no). I’ve been using Trifecta for over a year, and we haven’t seen each other for about that long. I told her about Trifecta and how much I love it! Earlier she said she wants to get a face lift…I said if she ever does, she has to go to you! I told her you do Vertical Restores and only use local anesthesia…a BIG plus in my opinion. If I ever have one, I’d definitely go to you, your results are awesome! Thank you, I love your products!

Hi Kasey—Thanks for your comment! What a wonderful compliment from your ex-daughter-in-law! 😊 It’s amazing to hear that Trifecta has been making such a difference for you, and we’re so glad to know you’re loving the results. We’re honored by your kind words and your recommendation about the Vertical Restores too—thank you! It sounds like you’re glowing, and we’re thrilled that our products have played a part in that. If either of you ever decide to take the next step with any treatments, we’d love to be there for you too! Thanks again for sharing your experience, and I’m so happy you’re enjoying the products!

Do I need to add the prescription Tretinoin to my Trifecta regimine? I am 54 and usually use it but stopped once I started the 3 step program.

KaramMD Skin replied:
Hi Meredith—Thanks for your comment! Yes, you can use your Tretinoin alongside Trifecta. You would simply apply it after your Trifecta routine. Trifecta is meant to be used as a complete skincare system, so after you finish all three steps, you would apply your additional Retinol or Tretinoin afterwards as a supplement to the Retinol we already have in Illuminate. If you have any moisturizing products, those would be applied as the final step.

Any options for fine hair on the face? What are your thoughts on Derma-planing?

KaramMD Skin replied:
Hi Penny—Thanks for reading the Journal, and let’s see if we can answer your question for you. Fine hair on the face (lovingly referred to as peach fuzz) is completely natural, and for those looking to remove it there are various options depending on your skin’s sensitivity. Yes, derma-planing can be an option. This technique also gently exfoliates the skin’s surface while removing fine hairs, leaving your skin smoother and better prepared for skincare products and makeup application. When done professionally, derma-planing is safe and effective, however, I would recommend following your derma-planing with a soothing hydrating balm, like Enrich, to help support your skin barrier, as the razor blade can irritate the surface of your skin and make it more susceptible to sensitivity, breakouts, or irritation. Nurturing your skin barrier will help protect the affected skin. If you’re considering an at-home derma-planing tool, be sure to follow instructions carefully and use Enrich afterward to avoid irritation. The risks of derma-planing include minor cuts, irritation, redness, potential breakouts, and temporary sensitivity if not performed correctly. You could also consider waxing or threading, to remove the hairs by the root for a longer-lasting smoothness, or depilatory creams, which dissolve fine hairs but must be used with caution to avoid irritation. I hope this helps!
