What causes dark circles under the eyes?
Dark circles can result from several different causes, including genetic pigmentation, loss of volume beneath the eye, shadows created by tear-trough hollowing or under-eye bags, and excess under-eye skin. In many adults, what appears to be pigmentation is actually an anatomical shadow rather than truly darker skin.
Can eye cream actually get rid of dark circles?
It depends on the cause. Skincare can help improve skin quality and some forms of superficial pigmentation or sun damage, but it cannot replace lost volume, remove excess skin, or correct protruding orbital fat. That's why determining the cause of the darkness is so important.
What is a tear trough?
The tear trough is the hollow that develops beneath the under-eye, beginning near the inner corner of the eye. Genetics can make it visible at a young age, and age-related volume loss can make it increasingly pronounced.
Is filler good for under-eye hollows?
Filler can work very well for carefully selected patients with mild volume loss. The key is conservative treatment. Too much hyaluronic acid filler beneath the thin under-eye skin can create chronic puffiness, irregularities or a bluish Tyndall effect.
Is fat transfer better than filler under the eyes?
Neither is universally “better.” They solve different degrees of the same problem. For small, early hollows, conservative filler may be appropriate. For more extensive volume loss across the orbital rim, I generally prefer fat transfer because it allows restoration of volume without repeatedly accumulating large amounts of hyaluronic acid filler.
Why do I have under-eye bags even though I'm young?
Genetics can cause orbital fat to become prominent even in younger people. Under-eye bags don't necessarily mean your face is aging prematurely, and they aren't always caused by lifestyle or lack of sleep.
What is a transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty?
It is a surgical approach in which the orbital fat is accessed through the inside of the under-eye. This avoids an external incision through the eyelid skin and allows the surgeon to address protruding fat while preserving the external orbicularis muscle.
Can lower blepharoplasty change the shape of my eyes?
It can if the supporting structures of the under-eye are altered or excessive skin is removed. Preserving natural eye shape is therefore one of the most important considerations in under-eye surgery.
Do lasers tighten loose under-eye skin?
Lasers and other resurfacing treatments can improve certain aspects of skin texture and fine lines, but they should not be confused with removing true excess skin. I am particularly conservative with aggressive energy treatments around the under-eye because the skin is already extremely thin.
How do I know which under-eye treatment I need?
Look at the problem in components: hollowing, excess skin, protruding fat and true pigmentation. You may have one or several. The correct treatment plan should address only the anatomical problems that are actually present.
