When I began developing what would eventually become the Trifecta, there wasn’t an existing formula or blueprint for the specific system I wanted to create.
We were starting from scratch.
I worked closely with trusted cosmetic chemists and a laboratory, bringing them my objectives, my wish list of ingredients and benefits, and the clinical perspective I had developed over years of treating patients.
My role wasn’t to be the chemist. It was to establish the North Star for what we were trying to accomplish and evaluate whether each formulation was getting us closer.
I wanted a comprehensive system that could address the multiple signs of skin aging, deliver meaningful results, and remain well tolerated enough for people to use consistently.
That sounds relatively straightforward, but it turned out to be incredibly challenging.
The greatest difficulty was finding a way to incorporate such a robust combination of targeted ingredients without overwhelming the skin.
Every ingredient had a purpose, but ingredients don’t exist in isolation once they’re combined into a formula. Their concentrations, compatibility, stability, and effects on the skin all have to be considered together. Adjusting one component can influence the performance or tolerability of others.
And this is where the process became much more involved than I originally anticipated.
We would develop a formulation, test it with small groups of patients, gather feedback, and then return to the laboratory to make adjustments. Sometimes that meant reducing the concentration of a particular ingredient. Other times it meant changing the combination, adjusting the formulation, or reconsidering how ingredients were being delivered.
Then we would test again.
This process repeated itself over and over, with ingredients added, concentrations refined, and formulas repeatedly adjusted. We weren’t simply combining existing products or following a predetermined recipe. We were developing an original system around a very specific objective.
And throughout those four years, I kept coming back to the same question: Could we make this more effective without making it harder for people to tolerate and use?
It took more than four years of experimentation, testing, and refinement before we arrived at the formulas that became the Trifecta.
Looking back, there’s something interesting about how much complexity went into creating something intended to make skincare so much simpler.
But that was the whole point. I wanted the complexity to be in the formulation, not in the daily routine.
