Travel is great for your mindset. It’s not always great for your skin.

Between dry airplane cabins, changes in climate, disrupted sleep, and inconsistent routines, it’s very common to land somewhere and feel like your skin looks dull, dehydrated, or just “off.”

The good news is this is almost entirely preventable.

When Neda and I travel, I don’t overcomplicate this. I focus on a few things that actually move the needle: hydration, sun protection, supporting the skin barrier, and staying consistent with a simple routine. That’s it.

Since many people struggle with what to do when traveling, I wanted to share the tips I adhere to, to make sure my skin is looking and feeling its best, no matter where I land.

Why Does Travel Impact Your Skin?

Airplane cabins are extremely dry. Humidity can drop to levels lower than most deserts. That leads to increased transepidermal water loss, meaning your skin literally loses moisture while you’re just sitting there.

At the same time, UV exposure increases at altitude, especially UVA rays that penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to long-term damage.

Layer in poor sleep, stress, and changes in environment, and you have the perfect setup for dehydration, breakouts, and irritation.

So the goal isn’t to do more. It’s to protect your skin from these stressors in a simple, consistent way.

My Tips When I Travel

These are some of my personal travel tips that make the biggest difference.

01.

Don’t Change Your Routine

The biggest mistake people make is abandoning their routine when they travel.

Your skin is already dealing with a new environment, new schedule, and more stress. It’s not the time to start experimenting with product samples or lose momentum by skipping what’s working at home.

Neda and I keep it very simple. We don’t bring 8–10 products. We stick to the same core routine we use at home.

And practically speaking, we almost always travel with carry-ons. Space matters. A simple system makes that easy.

Focus on Hydration (Inside & Out)

Most people underestimate how dehydrating travel is.

I start increasing my water intake the day before I travel and continue throughout the trip. It’s much easier to stay hydrated than to try to catch up mid-flight.

A simple trick I use sometimes is adding a small pinch of salt to my water. It helps with absorption and maintaining hydration, especially on longer travel days.

On the skin side, hydration isn’t just about water. It’s about supporting the barrier so that moisture stays in the skin.

That means using products with humectants and barrier-supporting ingredients—not just spraying water or using light mists that evaporate quickly.

Protect the Skin Barrier

If there’s one thing I pay extra attention to when traveling, it’s the skin barrier.

Dry air, wind, altitude, and cabin conditions all increase moisture loss. If you don’t protect the barrier, your skin will feel it.

This is where occlusion becomes important.

A simple option is something like Vaseline or Aquaphor. They work. They seal the skin and reduce water loss. The downside is they can be greasy and messy, especially during the day.

This is one people overlook, especially when flying.

UVA rays penetrate airplane windows, and exposure increases at altitude. So even if you’re sitting by the window on a long flight, you’re getting more exposure than you think.

I apply sunscreen before I travel, and if it’s a long day, I’ll reapply.

This isn’t complicated, but it’s one of the most important habits for protecting your skin long term.

Keep It Simple In-Flight

You’ll see a lot of in-flight skincare routines online—sheet masks, constant misting, a full in-flight routine. You don’t need all of that.

In fact, a lot of those things can make your skin worse. Water-based products without proper barrier support can actually increase dryness as they evaporate.

My approach is simple: Hydrate, support the barrier, protect from sun... then leave your skin alone.

Prioritize Sleep and Recovery

Travel disrupts your sleep, and your skin reflects that.

There’s no product that replaces rest.

When I arrive somewhere, I try to get back on a normal sleep schedule as quickly as possible. It makes a noticeable difference not just in how you feel, but how your skin looks.

A Simple Approach to Skincare While Traveling

When we travel, we don’t overpack skincare.

We bring what we know works and what we’ll actually use.

For us, that’s a consistent routine, a good moisturizer with barrier support, and sunscreen.
