Why Your Diet Matters for Your Skin
The saying “You are what you eat” couldn’t be more relevant when it comes to your skin.
As the body’s largest organ, your skin is constantly influenced by what you put into it. A clean, nutrient-rich diet provides your skin with essential building blocks for repair, hydration, and resilience, which are all key to maintaining your skin’s natural glow.
A diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats can:
- Reduce skin conditions and inflammation
- Support natural collagen production
- Boost skin hydration
- Improve skin elasticity and firmness
- Protect against environmental stressors
On the flip side, diets high in processed foods can introduce toxins into your system, which try to escape through the skin, leading to clogged pores and acne. Refined sugars bind to collagen and elastin which weakens these proteins and increase signs of aging like sagging, wrinkles, and dullness. Additionally, heavily processed foods can spike blood sugar levels that contribute to inflammation, disrupt the skin barrier, and accelerate collagen breakdown, leaving skin looking dull and tired.
So, if you want to keep your body in optimal health, and as a result achieve that natural glow and healthy skin, it start with your grocery list!

I enjoy your video presentations and learn so much. I recently listened to the one on red light therapy. Do you think it can exacerbate melasma?
Kindly,
Susan

Hi Susan—Thanks for your comment! We’re so glad to hear you’re enjoying the video presentations and finding them helpful. Red light therapy can offer a range of skin benefits, including reducing inflammation and promoting healing. However, when it comes to melasma, results can vary. In some cases, certain types of light or heat exposure can potentially trigger or worsen pigmentation, especially if the device emits higher levels of heat or if the individual is particularly sensitive. For that reason, it’s always best to proceed with caution. If you’re considering incorporating red light therapy into your routine, we recommend consulting with a dermatologist or licensed skin care professional who can evaluate your skin type and melasma severity to determine the safest approach.

Hello, thank you for sharing this with us! What do you think of red light therapy booths?

KaramMD Skin replied:
Hi Soodi—Thanks for your comment! Red light therapy booths are gaining popularity for their potential benefits in skin health, muscle recovery, pain relief, and even mood and sleep support. They work by using low-level red or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular activity. While results can vary, many users report improvements with consistent use. It’s important to choose a quality device and view it as a complementary therapy rather than a cure-all. If used properly, it can be a great addition to a wellness routine. We recommend looking for devices that have been independently tested, offer wavelengths in the therapeutic range of 630-850 nm, and have sufficient power output (measured in mW/cm²) for effective penetration. Additionally, ensure the device is FDA-cleared or has certifications indicating safety and quality.

I am one week post laser treatment fraxel to my face. I just ordered your trifecta skin care regimen. I will be able to use it in one week. I receive the balm as a birthday bonus. I didn’t use that today. I am blown away with this product from the first use. What a nice and soothing product. A little goes a very long way. I’m looking forward to using your line and the results. I enjoy your philosophy and approach to skin care. Thank you for sharing your talents, brains and recipes.

I’m loving all this new information, I’m 69 and ready for surgery, however , at this age would it make any difference to my skin now to follow your routine ?

Hi Yvette —Thanks for your comment! It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin, and following a good skincare routine can absolutely make a positive difference, no matter your age. While skin does change over time, with age, it’s natural for skin to lose some elasticity and firmness, but the Trifecta is a tailored routine that can still help to improve texture, hydration, and overall appearance. It’s great that you’re considering surgery, and a proper skincare routine can support the healing process and keep your skin in its best condition before and after.

Hi Dr. Karam,
you spoke above about the benefits of traditional saunas. Can you tell us what your thoughts are on using a steam room (skin and health-wise).
I’d love to incorporate using the steam room with your Trifecta regiment. Is there any product I can use to enhance the experience of using a Steam room? I’ve tried some in the past, but not in a regular basis. Mostly, they simply melt off during the steam.
Thank you so much!
Carrie

Hi Carrie—Thanks for your comment! Steam rooms can provide excellent benefits for both your skin and overall health. The warm, moist air helps to open up pores, allowing for deeper cleansing and better absorption of skincare products, while also boosting circulation and promoting overall skin rejuvenation. Using a steam room alongside the Trifecta regimen can be a wonderful addition. However, we would recommend applying products after your steam session, using the full Trifecta while your skin is still warm. These products are designed to deeply penetrate the skin, providing lasting hydration and support. For the best experience, you can also apply the Enrich after your steam session. This will lock in moisture while calming and soothing your skin. I hope this helps, and we’re thrilled that you’re enjoying the Trifecta!
