Skincare Products You Don't Need (+ Some That You Do)

various skincare products not needed for a successful skincare routine

The amount of skincare products out there can be overwhelming: cleansers, serums, oils, moisturizers, creams, face masks, toners… if you have a bathroom full of these products, trust me, you’re not alone.

But, too many skincare products don’t just fill up your space; they can also make keeping up with a consistent routine far more difficult.

The truth is, you don’t actually need a lot of fancy skincare products to achieve beautiful, bright, glowing skin.

If you have the right products and use your skincare routine consistently, every single day, you can skip the expensive eye creams and fussy details.

In fact, it’s far more important to have skincare products that are simple and easy to use than it is to have a ton of products available, especially if you have so many you can’t keep up.

When it comes to choosing those products, if you don’t have the vital ingredients needed healthy skin, it doesn’t matter how many products you have in your skincare routine—you aren’t going to see the results you’re hoping for.

So, which skincare products do you really need, and which ones can you skip?

Here’s my opinion:

Skincare Products You Don’t Need

Simplify your skincare routine and focus on what truly matters. Not all skincare products are necessary for achieving healthy skin; in fact, some might be setting you back without you realizing.

Here’s a list of items you can skip without compromising your routine, and why you don’t need them.

01.

Eye Creams

Eye creams often claim to target the delicate eye area, but the truth is those creams typically contain the same active ingredients found in regular moisturizers.

The skin around your eyes is thinner, but if you have the right ingredients in your facial products, there’s no need for a separate eye cream.

A facial cream with active ingredients applied carefully around the eyes can serve the same purpose.

02.

Foaming Cleansers

Foaming cleansers are popular for the satisfying lather they produce, but they often rely on sulfates or other harsh detergents to create that foam.

These ingredients can strip the skin of its natural oils, disrupting the skin's moisture barrier and leading to dryness, irritation, and even increased oil production as your skin tries to compensate.

A gentle, non-foaming cleanser is usually a better choice for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

03.

Toners

The notion that toners are necessary for balancing your skin’s pH after cleansing is outdated.

Instead, you should use a cleanser that maintains your skin’s natural pH balance, making a toner unnecessary. This approach helps preserve your skin's barrier without drying it out or requiring an extra step.

Additionally, the belief that toners can close pores is a myth—pores don’t open and close. Pore size is genetically determined, and while some products can reduce their appearance by controlling oil or clearing debris, they cannot change their size.

04.

Expensive Face Masks

Face masks can be a fun addition to your skincare routine, but they’re not essential for achieving healthy skin.

The benefits they provide are often temporary—such as added hydration or brightening for a few hours—and these benefits can be achieved for the long-term with the daily use of good-quality serums and moisturizers.

Unless you enjoy the ritual of masking for a soothing self-care evening, or you are targeting a superficial concern like wanting to plump or de-puff for a specific occasion, you can skip these products without missing out on long-term skin benefits.

05.

Scrub Exfoliators

Harsh physical exfoliators with sand-like particles or microplastic beads can feel like they are effectively sloughing away dead skin, but these products often do more harm than good.

The large abrasive particles can create microtears in the skin, leading to irritation. Over time, they can weaken the skin’s protective barrier and cause increased sensitivity.

Opting for a light AHA/BHA chemical exfoliant or a natural enzymatic exfoliator will give you a deep clean without physical damage to the skin barrier. If you’re looking for a physical exfoliating experience, look for natural, ultra-fine powders as a gentler, safer, and often more effective way to buff away dead skin.

06.

Natural Products Without Active Benefits

Many skincare products marketed as “natural” claim to be better for your skin, but not all of them provide skincare benefits you're looking for.

For example, while coconut oil is an effective moisturizer, it’s also highly comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores and potentially lead to breakouts. On the other hand, Coconut Milk Powder contains significant amounts of Vitamin C and copper, both of which are known to boost collagen production.

Make sure you look into the ingredients being used, and rather than focusing solely on labels like “natural” or “clean.” Claims of “clinically-tested” offer more concrete and measurable insights into a product’s effectiveness. When selecting skincare products, natural or not, prioritize ingredients with proven benefits.

Skincare Products You Do Need

Rather than overwhelming your skin with unnecessary products, focus on a few key essentials that include powerful ingredients to target your skin’s specific needs.

These essentials ensure that your skin gets the vital nutrients and support it needs to stay healthy, glowing, and youthful. Here are the products you truly need:

01.

A Gentle Cleanser

Cleansing is the foundation of any skincare routine. A gentle cleanser effectively removes dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping your skin of its natural moisture.

It’s important to choose a cleanser that respects your skin’s natural pH and doesn’t disrupt the skin barrier.

By selecting a cleanser that maintains the integrity of your skin, you can eliminate the need for a toner altogether, simplifying your routine while ensuring your skin stays balanced and healthy.

Rinse

SHOP RINSE

Rinse

Rinse Daily Cleanser is a gentle, yet effective, non-foaming cleanser that will not strip you skin of its natural oils or disrupt your pH balance.

It contains top ingredients like Aloe Vera for soothing and hydrating, Glycerin for moisture retention, and Lauryl Glucoside, a mild, non-sulfate cleansing agent.

It also includes Broccoli Seed Oil and Fireweed Extract to nourish and calm the skin while providing antioxidant protection.

Regular use of this cleanser leaves your skin clean, soft, and ready to absorb the next steps in your routine.

02.

A Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is a powerhouse antioxidant that helps brighten the skin, reduce pigmentation, and protect against environmental damage.

Vitamin C also plays a crucial role in stimulating natural collagen production, making it a vital ingredient for maintaining a youthful complexion.

Incorporating a Vitamin C serum into your routine helps keep your skin balanced, clear, and glowing.

Quench is a powerful skincare ally for a radiant, healthy complexion.

03.

An All-in-One Anti-Aging Cream

As we age, our skin requires more targeted care to combat the signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity.

An all-in-one anti-aging cream can simplify your routine by combining multiple benefits into one powerful product, making it even easier to stay consistent.

Regular use of this multi-active cream will keep your skin firm, smooth, and youthful.

04.

An Enzymatic Exfoliator

An enzymatic exfoliator offers a gentle yet effective way to exfoliate without the harshness of traditional scrubs.

Enzymes gently dissolve dead skin cells, making this method ideal for all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin.

Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin cells and revealing a brighter complexion.

Finding a gentle, yet powerful, exfoliator is essential, as it encourages cell turnover, promotes even skin texture and tone, and is the solution for achieving smoother, brighter, and healthier-looking skin.

Polish

SHOP POLISH

Polish

Polish Enzymatic Exfoliator is a dual-action product. It uses enzymatic exfoliation from fruit enzymes, Papain and Bromelain, to dissolve dry, dead skin cells, without causing damage to the skin barrier, and also has a very subtle physical approach.

Unlike abrasive sand-like particles that can damage the skin barrier, Polish uses natural ultra-fine Rice, Coconut Milk Powder, Matcha and Bamboo powders, to gently polish the skin’s surface.

This unique, water-activated powder, also includes powerful actives like Vitamin C and Azelaic Acid to brighten and even out skin tone.

05.

A Multi-Tasking Moisturizer

Moisturizing is essential for keeping your skin hydrated, smooth, and resilient.

A good moisturizer should not only hydrate your skin but also support and strengthen the skin barrier, which protects against environmental stressors and moisture loss. By reinforcing the skin barrier, a moisturizer helps prevent dryness, irritation, and sensitivity, ensuring your skin remains healthy and balanced.

Look for a moisturizer that also actively addresses specific skin concerns such as fine lines, uneven texture, or hyperpigmentation, making it a versatile and valuable addition to your skincare routine.

A well-formulated moisturizer provides long-lasting hydration, improves skin texture, and enhances your skin’s natural defenses, contributing to overall skin health.

Enrich

$100.00

SHOP ENRICH

Enrich

Enrich Breathable Barrier Balm is more than just a moisturizer; it locks in hydration by forming a barrier that supports skin smoothness, while also allowing oxygen to your skin in order for it to breathe and detox.

It’s designed to soothe and repair with potent plant oils rich in omegas and antioxidants, that not only nourish the skin, but have profound anti-aging effects as well.

Astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant, helps to brighten and tone the skin, while Bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol, improves skin texture and tone.

06.

Sunscreen (SPF)

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable in any skincare routine.

Daily sun protection is essential to prevent skin damage, pre-mature aging, and reduce the risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen helps protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and the breakdown of collagen and elastin.

Look for sun protection like EltaMD, which contains Zinc Oxide, a mineral that provides broad-spectrum protection by reflecting UV radiation away from the skin.

Lightweight and non-comedogenic, this sunscreen is perfect for daily use under makeup or on its own, ensuring your skin stays protected without feeling greasy or heavy.

Do prescription NAD+ and prescription DMAE gels both used topically really help? I’ve got a friend who swears by these and gets them from an online MD. I trust you and have learned so much watching your videos. I haven’t found anything yet that you have said about these products.
