Sensitive Skin 101
Sensitive skin is a condition where the skin exhibits a overactive response to various factors, leading to discomfort and visible irritation.
People with sensitive skin often find that their skin feels uncomfortable after washing or applying certain products, and they may experience flare-ups in response to changes in their environment or even stress that look like:
- Redness and Blotchiness
- Dryness and Flakiness
- Stinging, Burning, or Itching
- Breakouts and Acne
*If your sensitive skin symptoms are accompanied by inflammation and swelling, severe discomfort that does not go away, widespread hives on the body, or difficulty breathing, you may be experiencing an allergic reaction rather than typical sensitivity. Unlike sensitive skin, allergic reactions are more intense, can spread beyond the area of exposure, and may require immediate medical attention.
What Causes Sensitive Skin?
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin, acting as a protective shield that keeps moisture in and harmful elements out. Reactions usually occur because the skin’s natural protective barrier is compromised, making it more susceptible to irritants.
