The Science of Aging: Can You Turn Back the Hands of Time?
We’re all aging—it’s the one thing none of us can escape. But while we can’t slow down time, we can delay the visible signs of aging that come along with it.
In fact, age is just a number, and our biological age—the age our skin appears to be—can be different from the number of years we’ve lived.
Biological age refers to how old our cells and tissues are functioning, as opposed to our chronological age, which is simply the number of years since we were born.
The concept of biological age means that even though your birth certificate might say you’re 50, your skin could look and behave like it’s 40—or, in some cases, like it’s 60. This difference in perceived age is influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, environmental exposures, and how well you’ve taken care of your skin over the years.
Your skin’s biological age can be positively impacted by consistently using skincare products with active ingredients that target specific aging processes.
This is because the skin has a remarkable ability to adapt, regenerate, and repair itself at the cellular level.
By providing your skin with the necessary tools, such as antioxidants, peptides, and retinoids, you can essentially “turn back the clock” on your skin’s appearance, making it look younger and healthier than what your chronological age might suggest.

Hi there! I just started using your product a few weeks ago but my skin seems to be getting worse. It is still dry, so I am going to add the enrich. What is concerning me the most is that I have a lot more brown spots coming up. I am going to stay with the program; but, do you have any suggestions? Thank you Barbara Mark.

Hi Barbra—Thanks for reching out, because we would love to help you have the best experience possible while switching over to a new skincare system like Trifecta. Many people who are beginning to use powerful active ingredients for the first time report dryness, but don’t worry, your skin is in an acclimation phase and will evetually adapt and balance back out. In the meantime, you are right on track to include Enrich in your routine. This was exactly why we created this deeply nourishing and hydrating balm, because it will to help your skin stay moisturized and more comofortable through the acclimation phase, and beyond! Check out the article “Enhance Your Skin Routine: Enrich Breathable Barrier Balm” to learn more about how it can help with your dryness.
As for the brown spots, there could be a couple things happening. One is your cells are speeding up cell turnover rate, which means it could be bringing those darker cells to the surface as they start to shed away—but it is also likely the fact that your skin is more sensitive to the sun than you are used to, due to the Retinol you are adjusting to. Retinol can increase photodamge if you are not wearing sunscreen, and that can lead to dark spots and hyperpigmentation. We also have an article about this “Hyperpigmentation vs. Melasma + Best Ingredients for Dark Spots” which explains how the sun can lead to darks spots and what you can do to prevent them. This means it is very important to be diligent about using a broad-specturm sunscreen everyday. It should be at least 30-50 SPF, reapplyed every two hours in addition to wearing hats and glasses if you’re outside.
All of that should help! Stick with it and trust the process, you’ll be glad you did. Best of luck!

I am interested in how I can use the trifecta along with my morning hydroquinone and evening Tretinoin. I would like to use them all.

Hi Cheryl—Great question, and yes, you can certainly use your additional products alongside Trifecta! We recommend using Trifecta as a complete three-step system; so apply Rinse, Quench, and Illuminate, followed by your other products like Tretinoin and hydroquinone on top. You can use them after Trifecta, as directed morning and evening, and then follow your prescription strength products with SPF during the day and a balm/hydrator to lock everything in at night. This is going to help you really maximize your routine and achieve beauitful results. Best of luck, and hope this helps answer your question!
